When my maternal grandmother died some years ago, one of the treasures that was uncovered by the family as we sorted through the lifetime of possessions that she left behind was a simple wooden box. But this unassuming box held a secret treasure – almost 300 glass negatives which my grandfather had taken back in the 1920s and 30s. I am still working through this treasure trove, cleaning the slides as best I can before scanning them into the 21st Century. I considered ‘retouching’ the images as I scanned them, removing the imperfections that time has wrought upon them, but in the end I decided to leave them as they are. The results, I think, are a more truthful representation of the image and of the lives they reveal from almost a century ago.
